This retrospective takes an exhaustive look at Ringgold’s pieces, exploring everything from her work in children’s books to her artistic practice in quilting. As an artist, author and educator, Ringgold narrates the histories of Black America through her work and raises difficult political topics through playful visuals. 17 to June 5, the exhibit spans over 60 years of Ringgold’s career and occupies half of the museum’s limited space. Now, Ringgold’s work has made its way downtown for her first - and long-overdue - retrospective, “Faith Ringgold: American People.”Ĭurrently on display in the New Museum from Feb. She has redefined the narrative for Black female artists her pieces are featured in the Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection, and she’s taken on the role of an activist through her work documenting the civil rights movement, switching between textiles and paintings. ![]() Faith Ringgold is a trailblazer in the modern American art scene. ![]()

Sixteen months later, the king’s fifth wife would follow her cousin Anne Boleyn to the scaffold, having been convicted of adultery and high treason. Those five minutes will seem like an eternity.įinally, even something as mundane as body temperature can affect our time perception. That stress will cause you to “record” the event in great detail, making a lot of memories – e.g., of the faces of the people in the front row. When you're finally up on that stage, you'll probably feel highly stressed. Furthermore, if we're experiencing a lot of stress, our senses are heightened, so we tend to make more memories.įor example, imagine that you despise public speaking yet you're obligated to give a five-minute presentation. The second factor in “time warping” is memory: the more memories we make, the more slowly time seems to pass. The participants' fear caused their brains to process information in far greater detail, and consequently, time seemed to decelerate. This phenomenon was tested by neuroscientist David Eagleman, who intentionally terrified his (willing) participants by throwing them off a skyscraper roof (don’t worry, they were wearing safety harnesses). When we process more information in a given period of time than usual, time seems to slow down. ![]() For example, when we’re afraid, we process all sense data – what we see, hear, smell, taste and feel – more thoroughly. ![]() ![]() So what factors influence this perception?įirstly, our emotions. ![]() In short, our perception: While the flow of time itself doesn’t vary, our perception of it does.
